The Ballad of Little Jo is a 1993 American Western drama film written and directed by Maggie Greenwald. It is inspired by the real-life story of Josephine Monaghan, a young woman who lived as a man in the late 19th century.
Joe "Little Joe" Monahan (1850–1904), born Johanna Monahan, was an American businessman who worked in various prospecting and cattle industries around Silver City, Idaho, under an assumed masculine name and identity. Probably so, as the film is said to be inspired by a true story. There is some fine acting especially from Suzy Amis which sustains the film, and also a very closely and carefully rendition of details of the day-to-day life in the epoch.

Based on a true story, this is the tale of Josephine Monaghan, a young woman of the mid nineteenth century who is thrown out of her parents' home after being seduced by the family's portrait photographer and giving birth to his child.
Though based on a true story, it’s my understanding that some liberties and artistic license were taken. But the overall story rings true: a young woman who was disowned by her family for having a child out of wedlock goes west, disguises herself as a boy to avoid the constant threat of rape.
