- Loved calculus, dislike proofs... should I major in math?
So far I've taken the Calc 1-3 sequence, Intro to Linear Algebra, Discrete Math (for CS majors) and Stats. I've had all A's apart from discrete where I got a B. I loved calculus and linear algebra, but they didn't really involve proofs.
Apr 22, 2024 · My advice to you is that you don't have to become a research mathematician in order to enjoy mathematics. For most students, it takes a certain willingness to tolerate or endure the academic structure of a degree program, irrespective of the area of study.
Possible choices are engineering, chemistry, computer science, biology, economics, etc. Structure your curriculum so that if the math degree doesn't work out, you can complete the alternate degree without needing to add years of study. This is where an adviser comes in handy.
If a math major does indeed seem like a good fit for you, research universities and colleges that offer strong math programs, internships, and research opportunities to get practical experience and a deeper understanding of the subject.
