Pull the grille and look at them. If the foam surrounds are rotten, it's obvious. If there are tears in the cones, obvious.

   As long as you do your due diligence, there is almost no reason not to buy used unless you just want it to be new. I've bought a pair of 15+ year old Robertson Audio Silver 25s in 2012 (now 23 year old) and a pair of 3 year old Usher S520 in 2011 (now 12 years old) and they still work flawlessly.
