- Ramones. An incredibly obvious choice I know, but I’d argue any list that left out the Ramones would commit a grave injustice. An even greater injustice of course is classic-rock radio’s insistence on only playing “I Wanna Be Sedated” and “Blitzkrieg Bop,” as if the entire rest of the catalog doesn’t exist.
- Black Flag. The original punk sound of 1975-1979 always had three strands running through it: pop-catchiness, artistic flair and raw aggression. When the original movement imploded at the end of the decade, these three essential split off into their own styles: New Wave (pop), Post-Punk (artsy) and Hardcore Punk (aggression).

- English Dogs - The Chase is On (Forward Into Battle, 1985) "This record in my opinion is the perfect mix of punk and metal. It's my go to whenever anyone asks what my favorite metal/punk record is.
- Spermbirds - Bed Tool (Something To Prove, 1986) "Super underrated band from the 80’s. They never really toured the States much, so I think they got a bit overlooked here.
- Inepsy - Street City Kids (Rock'N'Roll Babylon, 2003) "My all time favorite Canadian band, and that’s saying a lot. Motörhead/Discharge worship done perfectly.
- Belching Penguins - Shitfaced (Draft Beer.... Not Me, 1986) "This one was an early Municipal Waste favorite. We’ve been talking about covering this song for almost 20 years.
Punk metal is a fusion of hardcore punk and thrash metal which came to prominence during the mid-'80s. The marriage seemed natural, since both styles were intense, riff-driven, and often manically uptempo. Punk metal bands generally had more technique than the average hardcore outfit, but their riffs weren't quite as intricate as the average ...

When they went into the studio to record their debut full-length, they were armed with a set of songs that would shift the goalposts of extremity.
