Okehampton is a small Devonshire market town with around 6,000 population. It is famous for being ‘the gateway to Dartmoor’ and sees its fair share of tourists because of this location. Okehampton is located in the middle of West Devon – at equal distances between the north and south coast. It is a 30 minute (23 mile) drive from Exeter and an hour’s drive to Plymouth. If you are driving from London, it’s around a 3 hour 45 minute drive in good traffic.
Okehampton sits on the A30, so it is easy to access from Exeter and other destinations. Okehampton Castle
This dramatic castle is definitely one of the best things to do in Okehampton. Okehampton Castle was built in the 11th century, shortly after the Norman invasion. Surrounded by beautiful woodland, Okehampton Castle is a popular destination for walkers and a great place to take the dog on a gentle stroll. The castle is also well-known for its wildlife and swathes of bluebells in the spring.

- Dartmoor. Okehampton is in the wild heart of Devon, right on the northern edge of Dartmoor National Park. Dartmoor’s uplands are Carboniferous granite, more than 300 million years old, and bursting through the moorland in rocky outcrops known as tors.
- Okehampton Castle. On a slender rocky outcrop above the West Okement River, Okehampton Castle is a motte and bailey castle raised by the Norman Sherriff of Devon, Baldwin FitzGilbert in the last decades of the 11th century.
- Dartmoor Railway. Okehampton is no longer served by regular trains, but is on a preserved stretch of the London and South Western Railway’s West of Main Line.
- Meldon Viaduct. At the Meldon Dam, under ten minutes from Okehampton, you can park up and set off in search of this majestic industrial era truss bridge.
