   Why is Newmarket a small town?

   • Newmarket itself was geographically small until the 20th century, surrounded by agricultural townships. After the Second World War, subdivisions actively replaced farmland, pushing the town borders outwards. Newmarket grew 4.4 per cent between the 2016 and 2021 censuses, slower than the overall growth in York Region of 5.7 per cent.
