Lyme, in New London County, is located in southeastern Connecticut on the Connecticut River and adjacent to the Long Island Sound. Formerly East Saybrook, the town separated from Saybrook in 1665 and named in 1667. The southern section of Lyme became the municipality of Old Lyme in 1855.

Located mainly on Lyme Street south of Interstate 95, the village, settled in the mid-17th century, has an architectural history dating to the early 18th century, flourishing as a shipbuilding center and home to many ship captains.
The Old Lyme Historic District is a National Register of Historic Places-designated historic district, established in 1971 and the oldest in the Connecticut Valley Shore. The district contains 80 structures, with 50 pre-dating 1900.
