Wings exists in the same fictional universe as Cheers, and many characters from Cheers occasionally make special guest appearances on Wings. The series were produced by Grub Street Productions in association with Paramount Network Television .
Wings mostly takes place at a small airport, and a number of plots revolve around flying. While a lot of people fly, a comedy set in an airport may not be as appealing. Wings also came out a bit later than Cheers if I recall correctly, and didn't feature many big names in comedy (at the time).
Wings is sometimes mistakenly referred to as a spin-off of Cheers, but Wings was actually a wholly originally concept created with no preexisting characters. However, Wings does occur in the same cinematic universe as Cheers making them sister series.
