These are really good nominees and some dead-on mentions here in the comments but the great Texas movie's gotta be Giant.
I'm curious what Texans think is the best movie about Texas ever made. My favorite is No Country for Old Men. It's a masterpiece. The film is drenched in dread and tension. The action scenes are astounding and brutal. Tommy Lee Jones gives an iconic performance as the law man.
- Dazed And Confused. When it comes to teen comedies, Dazed and Confused ranks near the top of the list of the best ones. The hilarious movie was filmed in Austin and takes place there in the 1970s.
- Friday Night Lights. Texas' passion for high school football is second to none in the United States and there is no better high school football move than Friday Night Lights.
- The Last Picture Show. Director Peter Bogdanovich's The Last Picture Show is one of quite a few movies set in Texas to receive a Best Picture nomination.
- The Texas Chain Saw Massacre. Who would've guessed in 1974 that the low-budget slasher flick, The Texas Chain Saw Massacre would become one of the most successful and influential movies of all time?
- Mike Mcgranaghan
- No Country for Old Men. Texas has always been associated with law enforcement. Joel and Ethan Coen's No Country for Old Men, based on Cormac McCarthy's novel, takes viewers deep inside one case of criminal activity run amok.
- Friday Night Lights. It has often been said that football is a religion in Texas. Friday Night Lights shows how accurate that statement is.
- Giant. They say everything is bigger in Texas, and George Stevens's Giant proves it. The film is a big, sprawling, 201-minute epic about a Texas cattle rancher (Rock Hudson), his wife (Elizabeth Taylor), and a ranch hand (James Dean, in his final film).
- Urban Cowboy. Urban Cowboy was such a hit in 1980 that it caused sales of cowboy hats to skyrocket and propelled country music songs onto the pop chart.
