How has disease impacted lion populations in South Africa?
When lion movements are restricted, they are prone to inbreeding, which decreases genetic diversity. This can cause disease to spread more rapidly between prides. Fragmented habitats also increase lions’ vulnerability, as they are forced to disperse through human-dominated landscapes to find other lion populations and resources.
The Lion was recently assessed as Vulnerable under criterion A2abcd based on an estimated ~36% decline in the species range over three generations (approximately 21 years) and therefore a similar population reduction is suspected (IUCN Red List assessment: Nicholson et al 2023).

Retaliation is the primary reason for lion killings. We work with communities to help them realize the big cats value and to help them protect their families and livestock from carnivore predation. In Ruaha National Park, where 10 percent of the worlds remaining population can be found, AWFs Ruaha Carnivore Project is fostering a much-needed shift ...
Since 2012, AWF has been working with Ruahas communities to build livestock enclosures to protect livestock from predation, and, in turn, protect lions and other carnivores from retaliatory killing. In addition, Ruaha Carnivore Project provides community benefits to villages that demonstrate success in living peacefully with carnivores. With the co...
African Wildlife Foundations researchers are working to gain an understanding of carnivores populations, behaviors, movements, and interactions with people in order to develop appropriate conservation actions. Since 2002, our Large Carnivore Research Project has undertaken research aimed at ensuring the continued survival of large predators living ...
With around 23,000 African lions left in the wild, they’re now officially classified as ‘vulnerable’. 'I grew up just 5km outside Marsabit National Park in rural northern Kenya, and my early memories are of being surrounded by wildlife.
Jul 18, 2019 · Lions are currently listed as “vulnerable” on the International Union for the Conservation of Nature (IUCN) Red List of Threatened Species. In some parts of Africa, lions are classified as “critically endangered” because lion populations are still plummeting at an unprecedented rate.
Lions are classed as vulnerable on the International Union for Conservation of Nature (IUCN) Red List – but some African populations are classed as critically endangered, alongside the endangered Asiatic lion.
