- Although The Hunchback of Notre Dame exists on the periphery of horror, it represents a big moment for the genre in the American studio system, launching Lon Chaney to stardom as the first bonafide American “horror icon,” and presaging later smash hits such as The Phantom of the Opera.

Oct 5, 2021 · The Hunchback of Notre Dame is a certified REEL CLASSIC of silent, cinematic horror and it begins right there with Chaney’s performance as the deaf, half-blind, hunchbacked bell-ringer of the famous Cathedral of Notre Dame in Paris. It's a classic performance that time has not diminished in any way.
It isn't really a horror movie, despite its influence on horror cinema and dark moments of torture and torment. It seems unfair that Quasimodo is often thought of within a horror context, given his innocence and misfortune.
