Nov 5, 2008 · “Synecdoche, New York” is not a film about the theater, although it looks like one. A theater director is an ideal character for representing the role Kaufman thinks we all play. The magnificent sets, which stack independent rooms on top of one another, are the compartments we assign to our life’s enterprises.
I think my general consensus for this movie (and eventually all his others) was that the director was trying so hard to make the movie “artistic” that he doesn’t even make a good film in the slightest.
Sep 11, 2017 · In the case of “Synecdoche, New York”, its “ingredients” fit perfectly as a whole from the get-go. The dynamic between the characters is believable in spite of the surreal moments that play all throughout the film. We have to emphasize Hoffman’s role in the movie’s success.

For me, Synecdoche, NY is a sublime depiction of a certain type of person, who likely has some kind of anxiety, an absurdly ambitious creative drive and a debilitating sense of guilt. To some extent, if you want to like the movie, connecting to Caden Cotard on some level is helpful, maybe necessary.
