- This is a genuinely unsettling Japanese ghost story that employs a subtly creepy score, prowling camera work, simple yet powerful effects and fine performances. It also betters the original in every respect. Bettering the original in every way, this is a suitably creepy and disquieting horror mystery.

Ring 0: Birthday (リング0 バースデイ, Ringu Zero: Bāsudei) is a 2000 Japanese supernatural psychological thriller film directed by Norio Tsuruta, from a screenplay by Hiroshi Takahashi, based on the short story "Lemon Heart" from the Birthday anthology by Koji Suzuki.
Prequel explaining how young actress Sadako (Nakamara), haunted by visions, becomes the murdering spirit of The Ring after some strange deaths start occurring in the drama club she frequents.
If you are a Ringu fan, Ring 0: Birthday is a must watch. Ring 0: Birthday does a fantastic job of diving into Sadako’s backstory. It really shows you how tragic her character is. This film acts more like thriller/drama with some horror elements in it.
Ring 0 is great. It has such a melancholy, oppressive feeling at times. "Rasen" is... what it is. Definitely a radically different direction than the series ended up being with Ring 2 and Ring 0.
Ring 0: Birthday: Directed by Norio Tsuruta. With Yukie Nakama, Seiichi Tanabe, Kumiko Asô, Takeshi Wakamatsu. In this prequel to Ring, a young Sadako becomes an actress in hopes of escaping her troubled past.
While it's not as moody as Ring, Ring 0 still has some very good horror scenes and some smart camera-work. Seeing a white shape just at the edge of the screen is much more effective than, for example, the killer's POV.
