1. The Definition of “Miracle”. In sketching out a brief philosophical discussion of miracles, it would be desirable to begin with a definition of “miracle;” unfortunately, part of the controversy in regard to miracles is over just what is involved in a proper conception of the miraculous.
A miracle is a violation of the laws of nature that is caused by an intentional agent; and it has religious significance. Jesus’s miracles that we have discussed satisfy this definition perfectly. Jesus is an intentional agent who turned water into wine and resurrected the dead by violating the laws of nature.
