You are very close to downtown or Royal Oak for a night out, maybe a 15 minute car ride. The area is very safe and police response time is excellent. The schools are probably pretty comparable, I dont have kids so I cant really say. The night life is pretty good.
You are correct, as a resident of Grosse Pointe Farms I can only go to the GPF park (Pier Park) on my own. However, OP did not specify which of the Pointes they are looking at so wherever they end up, they'll have a nice park to go to.
