May 24, 2019 · Improv is an exercise of being in flow – of living in the moment and allowing the vibrancy and joy of life to bubble up and animate you. So of course, I was hooked. I took classes in Austin, San Francisco, London.
Drawn from the worlds of growth mindset, contemplative practice, improvisational theater, and positive reinforcement training. Also including other oddities and life adventures.
1. Be willing to be a fool. In improv, you’re submitting to the larger group, relinquishing rights to control the scene, the narrative or even the role you are playing. If someone decides that everyone is going to crawl on the floor, bark and wag their tails, that’s what you do.
- Letter to God—For one of our warm-ups, we adapted a reliable standard, the word-at-a-time letter. Our instructions directed players in pairs to use that same format—alternating smoothly from player-to-player to “write” a vocal letter—to write a letter, yes, and to have the letter written to God from a child’s perspective.
- Spiritual Scrapbook—Earlier this year, my colleague Cort Worthington introduced me to Photo Album, a lovely exercise he uses with business school students to help them get to know each other and get comfortable with shared control improv story-telling.
- The Guest House—This exercise shares some elements with “House Party,” a playful short form piece that lasts until the host can name the endowed qualities of each of three guests at a party.
Aug 20, 2013 · In this way, improv becomes a spiritual practice of pronoia, the belief that the world is conspiring to support you and shower you with blessings. We make a call with our intention—and then simply pay attention for the opportunities and wonders that seek us out.
This is why for some people, studying the art of improvisation is their spiritual practice. And most importantly, improv is a fun way of traveling on the journey to self-actualisation. Laughter and friendship are just two of the natural by-products of studying the art of improvisation.
