Spoilers. First and foremost, I like this movie a lot, easily an 8/10 for me. To me it's an interesting mesh of occult/cult horror present in Hereditary and The Void (Aaron Poole also stars in this film) and an investigation aspect found in films like A Cure For Wellness (also a long film).
When Paul falls down the hole in the prologue of the movie, he releases one of these monsters into the world. It’s goal is to spread it’s message like a communicable disease. It wants to create a bridge between the biosphere and the knowsphere and to bring about an apocalyptic pandemic of thought.

Still, I don't think The Empty Man is a ripoff or anything - and I would even argue that it has more ambition and ideas on its mind than Kill List, and it boasts a cosmic aura that makes it feel big. That said, they'd make for a perfect double bill.
"The Empty Man" is way better compared to the average horror movie that is released nowadays. It has a lot of good ideas, that unfortunately could not be properly developed. The result is an extremely disjointed film, that does not know what to achieve.
