While the book is very fine for even beginners, I'd recommend a different source: the MOOC Object Oriented Programming with Java from the University of Helsinki. It is a free, text based course, is very comprehensive, and (as opposed to any book) forces you to practice through graded exercises that need to be completed before moving on.
