  2. While the book is very fine for even beginners, I'd recommend a different source: the MOOC Object Oriented Programming with Java from the University of Helsinki. It is a free, text based course, is very comprehensive, and (as opposed to any book) forces you to practice through graded exercises that need to be completed before moving on.

  3. Head first Java is a very good book for beginners. It is also a very easy read. It is especially good for understanding object oriented programming.

  4. The "Head First: Design Patterns" is also very good as an introduction. When they were on sale (last year or two years ago) on Humble Bundle, I bought the bundle nonetheless because they are a valuable reference.
