Joe Besser, a good comedian, didn't really work for me as a stooge, in most instances. By the time Joe DeRita came along the Stooges were aging out and Joe was just riding on their cost tails. John.

After watching several of the shorts with Joe Besser I can’t seem to understand the dislike. He seems to have his own distinct personality that works well with Moe and Larry. Obviously, trying to fill the shoes of Curly/Shemp was an impossible task but I think his work stands up.
Oct 4, 2011 · With Curly Joe, they were making full length movies where their fast paced comedy didn't get to be front and center. The greatness of the Stooges is in Moe's slapping the other two, and in the movies with Curly Joe there was not enough of this.
Curly is funnier but Shemp is a better actor and more talented. Curly has his like 3 things he does while Shemp has too many to count.

Screen Gems then syndicated the shorts to television, whereupon the Stooges became one of the most popular comedy acts of the early 1960s. Comic actor Joe DeRita became "Curly Joe" in 1958, replacing Besser for a new series of full-length theatrical films.
