Mar 14, 2014 · “Bad Words” feels like a warmed-over “Bad Santa“—an R-rated comedy that seemed truly subversive and novel back in 2003. The difference there was that Billy Bob Thornton’s character was self-loathing and self-destructive in a way that gave him some glimmers of damaged humanity.

Although Bateman descends into realms that Adam Sandler has staked out in the movie-going public, Bad Words is a delightful and charming film and I recommend it highly. Though possibly not for kids.
- Bateman is let off his leash in this foulmouthed comedy.

Jason Bateman makes his feature directorial debut with the mean-spirited comedy Bad Words. In the movie, he stars as Guy Trilby, a deadbeat 40-year-old who finds a loophole in the bylaws of The Golden Quill Spelling Bee and decides to hijack the competition for reasons unknown -- much to the dismay of uppity contest officials, outraged parents and overachieving eighth graders.
Sadly for them, Guy is loud, crude and stubborn. Even worse, though, he can spell like nobody's business. We get our first glimpse of that in the opening sequence, as Guy dominates Regionals and absconds with the winning trophy, making his way to the first-ever televised Golden Quill Nationals (a recipe for disaster).
With Bateman directing, Bad Words is an unapologetic outlet for the Arrested Development star to run wild with his pointed sarcasm. Suffice to say, there's no shortage of the actor's trademark wink-and-one-liners. However, Bateman also seems to be taking a page from the Danny McBride school of acting in this -- that is, he's playing a total ass**** brimming with foul language and casual racism, and yet... he's still somehow likable. It's a slight change-up for Bateman (excuse the pun), who's usually known for playing the smart-ass with a heart of gold, but his raunchier Guy Trilby is just different enough that you feel like you're watching something new from him.
Jason Bateman's directorial debut is an agreeable, vulgar comedy that mostly delivers, thanks to an enjoyable story and a strong cast. That said, Bad Words isn't the most original movie, and while it makes for a good distraction, its raunchy sensibilities aren't all that hard-hitting. Official Discussion - Bad Words [SPOILERS] Synopsis: Guy Trilby, a 40-year-old middle school dropout gets his revenge by finding a loophole and attempting to win a spelling bee as an adult. Along the way, he befriends a female reporter and a young contestant whom he exposes to the wilder side of life, while learning a little about himself.
Mar 14, 2014 · Unfathomably well-trained direction and unceremoniously entertaining all throughout, Jason Bateman's directorial debut "Bad Words" is an ingenious, hilarious, and even occasionally heartwarming masterwork.
