Book 1 will feel like a more deeply fleshed-out transcript of Season 1 -- which is fine -- but progressively each book thereafter diverts further and further from the shows. By the time of Book 4 it's almost entirely different material, then it really especially pays off to have become a book reader. 27. solidmaxz.

I mentioned before that the plot is driven strongly by the will and motivations of the characters. This is often the case and it makes the story intriguing, twisting, and often unexpected. You can read A Song of Ice and Fire in two ways. Casually, which means you read the books, know the stories, but don't get to into it. Or crazily, which means you read the books, soak everything up, and fall head over heels in love with the series Martin has created.
Yes they are great books, and should be a good read even if you've watched the show. Book 1 and season 1 of GoT are very simillar in story, but after that the show diverges more and more. The books are obviously richer and have more characters that can't be fit into a TV show.
