Savage Attacker is a terrible feat because it performs horribly at its one niche, it has diminishing returns as you go up in level, it slows the game down because you've always got to reroll even though your reroll gives only a tiny boost on average to damage, and it's just plain boring.

Feats are an optional, woefully underused feature of D&D 5e. (For a list of all the Feats in D&D 5e you can refer to ourFeats List)
The Savage Attacker feat is a great way to get the most out of your melee weapon attacks because it effectively gives you “advantage” on your damage rolls. It’s that simple. Whether you’re rolling 2d6 for a greatsword, 1d8 (or 1d10) for a longsword, or any other kind of melee weapon, once per turn you get to throw a bit of extra fury behind the att...
To figure out if it’s worth taking the Savage Attacker feat (remember that taking a Feat usually means forgoing an ability score increase), we need to do a little math. How much extra damage does rerolling (usually) one damage die per turn actually equate to? Well, some somewhat simple math shows us that the average increased result of rolling any ...
Weapon damage dice remain fixed, no matter the character’s level. A 1d8 longsword in the hands of a 1st level fighter still does the same base damage as the same sword in the hands of a 20th level fighter. The difference in damage output is thanks to the fact that the 20th level fighter probably has a higher Strength modifier to add to the damage r...
Because Savage Attacker gives the biggest average damage buff to weapons with the biggest damage dice, this feat is almost exclusively the purview of classes with access to martial weapons. Savage attacker on all roles would be OP, but not so OP that it would break the game.
Jul 18, 2023 · This feat allows you to reroll the damage dice for a melee weapon attack once per turn, and use either total. This means, in theory, you have a second chance to maximize your damage output with every swing. But in reality, this feat falls short of being a hit.
If you use a 2d6 weapon, the Savage attacker will increase your average damage by 1.8. You need to have a lot of damage die for Savage Attacker to outclass GWM.
Posted Sep 22, 2024. This is a surprisingly ineffective feat - running a Monte Carlo simulation on a 7d6 roll, it only gives you an average of about 2.5 damage increase.

Sep 25, 2022 · Savage Attacker can absolutely work at the same time as Great Weapon Master. This is because Savage Attacker affects the damage dice and not the flat +10 damage bonus granted by Great Weapon Master. Also Savage Attacker lets you use either damage roll.
