  1. I feel they're all worth watching in the midst of Xena's overall arc. I could've been more literal in including various appearances by others on Hercules like Ares, Aphrodite, Salmoneus, Autolycas, etc. but I chose to be very specific beyond more commonly shared characters.

  2. It’s not worth a rewatch … it’s worth multiple rewatches from different perspectives! Apart from the early CGI, it has aged well. Given it’s vaguely “ancient Greek” setting not too much of the dialogue is out of place (although there’s some 90s trends evident in hair and makeup styles).

Injured during her exploration of the Cirra ruins, an unconscious Xena flashes back to her first encounter with Julius Caesar (Karl Urban) and the events that made her a Destroyer of Nations.

Xena must figure out how to stop history from repeating when she gets stuck in a time loop—one that proves deadly, temporarily, for herself, Gabrielle, and Joxer (Ted Raimi).

Gabrielle takes desperate measures when Xena agrees to travel to the land of Chin and assassinate Ming T’ien (Daniel Sing)—in an apparent backtrack on her road to redemption.

Following Gabrielle’s betrayal, Xena is arrested for her assassination plot and sentenced to death. But she finally gets Gabrielle to understand why she’s out for revenge.

Xena and Gabrielle’s plans to keep the Persian army from sacking Athens hits a snag when the latter is felled by a poisoned arrow.

Following Ephiny’s (Danielle Cormack) death, Gabrielle becomes Queen of the Amazons. Meanwhile, Xena pursues the killer, Caesar’s henchman Brutus (David Franklin), to track down another threat: Brutus’ enemy Pompey (Jeremy Callaghan).

As Caesar meets his bloody end, Xena and Gabrielle are crucified—just as Xena foresaw in visions—all thanks to the meddling of Callisto (Hudson Leick).

Xena discovers that her mother is dead and her home village of Amphipolis is now a portal to Hell, with the evil Mephistopheles (Anthony Ray Parker) plotting to invade the world of the living.

Caesar breaks out of the underworld and uses the Fates’ loom to rewrite history so that he and Xena are the married rulers of the Roman Empire… though Xena is soon drawn to a playwright named Gabrielle.

In the series finale, Xena understands she has to die in order to defeat Yodoshi (Adrian Brown). Gabrielle initially thinks she can bring Xena back from the dead… before realizing she’ll have to carry the Chakram from now on.

  3. Although a reboot is not my preference - I want a revival which also opens a door to an ongoing continuation for a new Warrior Princess - I’d still be interested in watching it as long as the people making it cared about being faithful to the characters of Xena and Gabrielle.

    • “Dreamworker” (season one, episode three) In “Dreamworker,” Xena and Gabrielle’s relationship is still in its first stage, which mostly consists of Xena needing to save Gabrielle from immediate danger.
    • “The Greater Good” (season one, episode 21) Gabrielle has gone from blond to redhead and has also picked up a few new moves. The cold open mimics “Dreamworker” in that we’re shown Gabrielle fighting—this time with a little more skill—only to pull back and realize Xena’s unamused horse is her pretend enemy.
    • “Girls Just Wanna Have Fun” (season two, episode four) Season two is one of the most Sapphic seasons of Xena and therefore features prominently in this list.
    • “Return Of Callisto” (season two, episode five) One episode later, Xena reintroduces a character who plays a significant role in the Xena/Gabrielle dynamic.
  4. Aug 9, 2020 · Watching (or rewatching) these ten episodes is a great way to celebrate Xena's 25th Anniversary. 10 Callisto. Callisto was Xena's greatest enemy and was a woman every bit as fierce, as tough, and as dangerous as Xena. The two had a shared history, as Xena murdered Callisto's family and drove her mad with grief.

  6. Before watching Xena (any of the episodes), watch the pre-history in the following 3 Hercules episodes from S1: "The Warrior Princess" (#9), "The Gaunlet" (#12), "Unchained Heart" (#13). You should also watch the 5 movies as well before watching Xena (and from what I understand before you watch Hercules as well, but that wasn't terribly clear ...
