  2. Oct 6, 2023 · 110 Minutes. 2023's V/H/S/85 takes the franchise back in time to the '80s. V/H/S/85 is chronologically the first V/H/S movie, but like the rest of the franchise, it does not directly lead into any other installments. This makes it very open-ended in terms of where to watch it in relation to the rest of the series.

  3. Following its release and subsequent successes, a sequel was fast-tracked under the working title of "S-V/H/S", in reference to Super VHS tapes developed in 1987. Though the franchise is structured as in an anthology format, recurring characters and scenes, as well as a continuing plot thread indicate that the sources of the videos will be revealed as the same threat.

The first V/H/S was a mixed bag of a horror anthology that mercifully had more hits than misses. The framing device revolved around a gang of thieves being asked to retrieve a VHS tape from a rundown house, and getting more than they bargained for when they watched the found footage therein.

This sequel – hitting soon after the release of the original – is much leaner, being shorter than the first, but not necessarily meaner, the films often substituting humour for scares. But that’s not a bad thing, with the end result an entertaining hotchpotch of styles and genres.Unfortunately, the framing device is the film’s weakest element, bringing little to proceedings and at times just slowing the sequel down as it endeavours to link the films together. Directed by You’re Next scribe Simon Barrett, it follows the efforts of a shady private detective and his girlfriend as they attempt to track down a missing college student.

Their search leads them to the student’s seemingly abandoned house, where they find a stack of mysterious videotapes that feature the twisted films that follow…

Adam Wingard both directs and stars in ‘Phase 1: Clinical Trials,’ in which a retinal implant destroys a man’s life. Wingard plays Herman Middleton, who loses one of his eyes in a car crash only to have it replaced by a bionic version. The corporation responsible for the implant also installs a recording chip, so that they can monitor the progress of their experiment, and as a by-product, we the audience can see everything that Middleton views.

Coming hot-on-the-heels of The ABCs of Death and the original V/H/S, it seems we are entering a golden age for the horror anthology. And V/H/S 2 doesn't disappoint; roll on part three!
