Season 2's departure from Tokyo Ghoul creator Sui Ishida's source manga was not well received, so in one sense, it was wise for the Tokyo Ghoul show to start fresh.

No, it continues from the manga. Season 2 is an alternative story to what happened in the second half of the first manga. TG:re ignored the changes made in the anime and adapted the second manga continuing various plot points and set ups from the manga that were removed or changed in the anime.
