Eight bucks is too much for Space Invaders. Its status as one of the best, most classic, most influential arcade shoot-'em-ups is unquestionable. Its enduring appeal and focused design make it a game still fun to play today, even three decades after its original release. But it's still far too simple of an experience to pay that high of a price. Eight bucks is too much.
The logic behind this Virtual Console release of Space Invaders: The Original Game seems otherwise valid -- we've known that Taito has been planning to release the franchise update Space Invaders Get Even on WiiWare for some time, so the company likely just wanted to get gamers reacquainted with the original design before that remix on the concept debuted in America. But even then, the issue of price just gets more glaring -- because Get Even will be downloadable for only 500 Wii Points itself when it arrives, three dollars less than this older predecessor.
Space Invaders: The Original Game is the 1978 arcade hit's 1997 SNES port, a game that served as one of the last commercial releases for Nintendo's 16-bit system in a year when most everyone had already migrated to the next-generation Nintendo 64. It offers a capable conversion of the arcade classic, in which you control a laser cannon on the ground firing straight up into the air, trying to take out waves of alien invaders as they slowly march down the screen. If you clear away every alien before they can touch down on the planet, you win the round -- and the next screen, full of another wave of invaders, appears. If you don't manage to shoot them all down, well, then you've just accepted responsibility for our homeworld's doom.
So what you get in this package is by no means bad -- a solid conversion of single-player Space Invaders, multiple graphical options and an interesting added multiplayer mode. It's just that, even with the added bells and whistles, it's still too hard to justify spending a full eight dollars for Space Invaders. You might have happily dropped 32 quarters into one of the original coin-op cabinets if you were around and gaming three decades ago, but today that same amount of cash should buy a much larger amount of content in a Wii download.
If you're a diehard Invaders addict and the prospect of having a version of the game selectable from your Wii's channel array seems terribly exciting to you, then by all means invest the Points. But everyone else, save them. Spend them on a more fully-featured 800 Point download from the SNES or Genesis libraries, or else just keep them in reserve for Taito's own Space Invaders Get Even when it finally arrives in the hopefully not-too-distant future.
