Even though Goodfellas has a lot of funny moments in it, it's still based on a true crime book and is a fairly realistic portrayal of mob life from the perspective of a guy fairly low on the totem pole.    Is Scarface a bad movie?

   • Maybe I'm expecting too much, but smack dab in the middle of such fantastic mob movies like Mean Streets, The Godfather 1 & 2, Goodfellas and Reservoir Dogs, I really feel like Scarface is the weakest link in the bunch. It's not a bad film by any means, but definitely nothing to write home about IMO.

   Is Scarface the best gangster film of all time?

   • Directed with operatic and kinetic power by Brian DePalma, I have to say that Scarface (1983) is probably my favourite gangster film of all time. That isn’t to say it’s the best. That is Scorsese’s masterpiece Goodfellas (1990). But I just love this film because DePalma and Stone and Pacino revel in excess, violence and tragedy.
