Years before Robin Hood had even entered production, Disney had considered doing a project on Reynard the Fox; however, due to concerns that Reynard was unsuitable as a hero, animator Ken Anderson adapted some elements from Reynard into Robin Hood, making the title character a fox.
On his own, Anderson blended his ideas for the character Robin Hood by conceptualizing him as a slick fox that still used his skills to protect the community. [ 10 ] Additionally, Anderson wanted to set the film in the Deep South desiring to recapture the spirit of Song of the South (1946).

The film is based on the legends of Robin Hood and Reynard the fox, a 12th-century Alsatian fairy tale character, [2] but uses anthropomorphic animals rather than people; in Robin's case being a red fox.
Robin Hood is the first Disney character to be skilled in archery with Gaston being the second, Li Shang being the third and Princess Merida being the fourth. The fact that Robin Hood is portrayed as a fox may be a reference to Reynard the Fox, a fox trickster of Western folklore.
