Ringu 2 was honestly a really good sequel, It had some more scares then Ringu and the dread was still around. The score is just as amazing as in the 1st one, it left me with that dread and unease that the 1st one left me with.
- 'Spiral' Is Too Different, But That's Kind of A Good Thing
- 'Spiral' Is Surprisingly Emotional
- It's An Interesting Direction to Look Back at
Even though Spiral generally picks up right where its predecessor left off, with the autopsy of Ryûji Takayama (Hiroyuki Sanada) who we see get killed in the iconic scene where Sadako (Rie Ino'o) crawls out of the tv, the film then goes into entirely new territory than before. We find out both Reiko (Nanako Matsushima) and Yôichi Asakawa (Rikiya Ôt...
Where this movie works is its emotional core. While a father mourning the death of his son is far from an original plot, it ties the film together, and Kôichi Satô gives a fantastic performance as our leading man who is struggling to move past his sons' death. Miki Nakatani is another stand-out here, especially as she shares the screen with Satô. W...
While this movie did indeed fail at the box office, resulting in a course correction by the studio to make more tonally consistent sequels with Ringu, looking back on Spiral as an experiment is captivating. It essentially does the opposite of what its predecessor does. This, of course, explains why so many didn't like it at the time and still don't...
Ringu 2 is a direct sequel to the first film while Rasen takes place in the same universe with some minor overlap. Watch Ringu 2 first. That being said... Both are a bit shaky. I think the first Ringu still holds up, but all of its sequels and the prequel, which I had toforce myself to sit through, get worse and worse as you go along.
The cursed video is FANTASTIC, especially love the towel headed man. The music, when used, is just soooooo good. Plus, Sadako crawling out of the TV is just so iconic. Rasen confused me, due to it being more of an adaptation of the book than a sequel to Ringu.
- Ringu (1998) It is almost unheard of that a remake or reboot can beat the originality of any first movie in a franchise. In the case of The Ring, this is entirely true.
- The Ring (2002) Gore Verbinski’s American remake of Nakata’s original film was a remarkable success. The Ring brought together elements of the original film such as minimalism and isolation while combining it with westernized themes and backstory for Samara.
- Ring: Kanzenban (1995) Ring: Kanzenban ranks so high on this list due to its ability to remain as accurate to the original Suzuki novel as possible. It is considered the be the truest to its source.
- Ringu 2 (1999) A year following the release of the original film, Hideo Nakata’s Ringu 2 proved that the budding series was worthy of an expansive franchise.
Of the films in the set Ringu 2 kind of gets the shaft, though it does include one substantial extra: the alternate sequel to Ringu, Spiral, directed by Joji Iida. The film was made simultaneously with Nakata’s Ring, and the two were released together as a double-bill.

While I might not rewatch this one as often as I will rewatch Ring, I'll always remember it as Ring's pretty good successor. Definitely better than Spiral, that's for sure. Next up, Ring 0:...
