      • Prince of Darkness is disappointing. Yes, this is a John Carpenter film, the whole film feels its unique style. But Prince of Darkness doesn't compare at all with the director's other films, especially The Thing. Prince of Darkness has a very mediocre plot in which there is almost no action or development.

  2. The set-up for “Prince of Darkness” is pretty good. The priest (Donald Pleasence, looking worried) appeals to the scientist (Victor Wong) to help save the planet. The graduate students are introduced, and a small romance blossoms between two of them. The computers are wheeled in.

  3. I'd seen most John Carpenter films before, but last year I tried to catch up on some of the few that I hadn't seen, namely Christine, Prince of Darkness and Village of the Damned. Prince of Darkness is now one of my favourites of his. The Thing and Halloween will always be objectively good.

  4. Prince of Darkness. 339 reviews. Hide spoilers. Review. Ratings Show all. Sort by Featured. 8/10. Effective and Eerie. One of the Director's most underrated Movies. This is almost a bona-fide Classic. The thing that keeps it from such an exalted status is a few major missteps.

  5. It's one of the worst horror movies I've ever seen. I am really truly questioning myself on whether I'm actually watching the same movie as you guys whenever someone praises this movie. I recently just finished watching The Apocalypse Trilogy, so this is the lowest recommendation on this list.

Frequent John Carpenter Donald Pleasance, known for playing Dr. Samuel Loomis in the Halloween movies, stars as an occultist priest in Prince of Darkness. The priest oversees a monastery for an organization known as The Brotherhood of Sleep. Pleasance brings his standard emotional prowess and psychological stability to his role in Prince of Darknes...

The Brotherhood of Sleep in Prince of Darknessis an esoteric organization whose purpose remains incomprehensible. For people who don't appreciate ambiguity, this aspect of the narrative may be a hard pill to swallow. The Brotherhood of Sleep communicates through dreams, and the movie is filled with surrealistic, ethereal dream montages. While visua...

One plot point that undermines the new theoretical and scientific horror territory explored in Prince of Darknessis an unnecessary love story between two of the scientists. Brian Marsh (Jameson Parker) and Catherine Danforth (Lisa Blount) play two of Dr. Birack's students who recently started dating. The tension existing between the characters as t...

Prince of Darknessdelves into some heady theoretical science, providing a completely new take on the Judeo-Christian ideas explored in horror movies. The scientists conclude the cylinder containing the embodiment of Satan is the offspring of an even more powerful entity known as "Anti-God." RELATED: The 10 Best John Carpenter Movies, Ranked (Accord...

While probing these abstract academic ideas is new ground for horror movies, concepts like Anti-God and interdimensional portals may be way too quixotic for some viewers. Conceptual science combined with supernatural entities is an intense mix. While some viewers may revel in Prince of Darkness's obscure ideas, others will find them burdensome.

When the sentient green liquid in the cylinder is exposed to people, they turn into zombie-like scionsof Satan. Once possessed, the characters in the movie start attacking each other. A lot of body horror ensues. Susan Blanchard's character Kelly absorbs most of the liquid, turning into Satan's vessel. Her body is disfigured and she becomes capable...

Prince of Darknessalso features a horde of homeless zombies outside The Brotherhood of Sleep's church led by none other than Alice Cooper. When members of Dr. Birack's research group try to leave the church after Satan's green ooze takes over, they are sabotaged by the transient undead. The Alice Cooper zombie gang is pretty cheesy. The film does n...
