Phantom 2040 is probably the best animated action-adventure series I've seen. It doesn't cater to a low-intelligence audience: you've really got to watch this, and watch it carefully, to follow everything that's going on.

An incredible mix of science-fiction, action/adventure, and historical adventure, Phantom 2040 drew on the legacy of the legendary comic strip character created by Lee Falk in the 1930's and followed the adventures of the Phantom in the future.
Although the series only lasted 35 episodes (about a series and a half), it received rave reviews. The series also had a lasting impact on the world on animation due to the casting of accomplished dramatic actors in character voice roles.
