Most of my favorite books on my shelf are published by Penguin anyway. Anything close to an academic compilation is Norton. Norton was the standard anthology when I studied English in Uni (Chicago, USA), and Penguin was the basic one for solitary books.

Penguin Classics are alright as they have pretty decent notes and the paper quality's quite good but if I had to choose a translated work, I'd normally go with something from Everyman's Library. If you're looking for affordable classics, Signet Classics (New American Library) would be good as they tend to be around $10 or less.
