Hermanus is masterful in linking oppressive masculinity to racism in Moffie. I’ve written before about his 2011 film, Skoonheid (Beauty), and how toxic masculinity and racism place limits on intimacy. Moffieis in many ways a superior film, with striking cinematography emphasising the bleakness of the surroundings and a punching, unnerving score tha...

The actors in Moffiebrilliantly portray these moments of being subject to the assault of toxic masculinity, with a particularly strong performance by Matthew Vey, who plays Nicholas’s best friend, Michael. Apr 11, 2021 · A fascinating and insightful exploration of the experience of these men in a specific time and place, Moffie is thematically rich, examining the strands of toxic masculinity and its formation; equally profound and poignant taken as a military film, as it is a queer narrative. Well-paced, tonally varied, it is a masterful work of poetic beauty ...

  7. Parents need to know that Moffie is a very affecting and challenging drama -- set in 1981 during the South African apartheid -- with strong (homophobic and racist) language, violence, and nudity. The movie shines a harsh light on racial and homophobic prejudice, without pulling any punches.
