Feb 11, 2024 · About a 20-minute walk from the historic city center, Palazzo Te is Mantua’s crown jewel. To start it is at the head of an expansive park, perfect for a relaxing city stroll. The Te Palace is the masterpiece of Giulio Romano. It is known for the illusionist frescoes that change theme from room to room.
It connects b to the city of Mantua, passing through fields of poppies and wheat and charming villages, and skirting the river Mincio, in a route that is almost 50 km long. Sunny weather, the wind in your hair and nature: this scenic route is ideal for spending a Sunday off the beaten track. 3 minutes. Museums and monuments.
- Ducal Palace. The same family who ruled Mantua from the 14th to the early 18th century, the Gonzaga family, had this massive complex of buildings built, originally as their private residence.
- Te Palace. Also built by a member of the ruling Gonzaga family in the 16th century, the Te Palace (Palazzo Te or Palazzo del Te) is slightly outside of the city center.
- Piazza Sordello. While not the very first people to settle the area, the Etruscans lived on the land that is now Mantua back in the 6th century BC. It is believed their town probably sat on this square.
- Basilica di Sant’Andrea. The Basilica di Sant’Andrea is a Roman Catholic 15th century cathedral that was built in the Renaissance style. It is made of bricks covered with painted stucco.
