Until 2016, Laxey was a village district with its own commissioners. From 1 May 2016, it merged with the parishes of Lonan and Maughold to form the new parish district of Garff, within which it is a ward. Laxey is also part of the Keys constituency of Garff, whose representation increased in 2016 from one to two members.
Garff is one of the six sheadings in the Isle of Man. It is on the east of the Island and consists of the parishes of Lonan and Maughold, the village of Laxey and the district of Onchan. It is also a House of Keys constituency (excluding Onchan).

There are nine positions on the board of Garff Commissioners, with each member serving for a period of four years. Each commissioner has been elected by the people of Garff with three Members coming from the Wards of Laxey, Lonan, and Maughold.
Administratively, since May 2016 the sheading of Garff has been covered by a single Garff local authority, a parish district, formed by merging the former village district of Laxey with the parish districts of Lonan and Maughold.
