The Laugh-O-grams are silent movies born to swing. From the start, Disney conceives his cartoons as a form of visual novelty jazz, filled with mock concerts and dance routines. Many of them amount to silent musicals, a foretaste of the syncopated Mickey and the jazz-mad Silly Symphonies.

These ambitious films were influenced both in presentation and technique by Paul Terry’s Aesop’s Fables.

Walt Disney founded his first professional film studio at a building designed by noted Kansas City architect, Nelle Peters, in May of 1922. He incorporated his new company with the Missouri Secretary of State’s office. He called it “Laugh-O-gram Films”.
It is, in some ways, the grandest of all his Laugh-O-grams, notable for its minutely detailed backgrounds, the proliferation of characters, the full range of gray tones in the drawings, and – above all – a fascination with atmospherics.
