Set in Sacramento, California from fall 2002 to fall 2003, it focuses on a high school senior who shares a turbulent relationship with her mother. Filming for Lady Bird took place from August to October 2016 in California and New York.
I think overall it depends on how you interoperate the end of the movie (obviously), but I never saw it as a happy or a sad ending, rather an acknowledgement of the way things are. Lady Bird is now able to see her mother as a human, and is able to approach things in a more mature way.
