  1. Jul 28, 2022 · As I start to consider future projects, one that's been lingering for a while is my joint Dark Matter/Killjoys "Friday Knights." One of the challenges here - which is the same as the Mando-Verse - is that there's much more content than Firefly. Killjoys ran for five seasons (50 episodes total), while Dark Matter ran for three (39 episodes).

Syfy is traveling to unexplored corners of space this summer, and the comedy-drama-not sure what it wants to be Killjoys, debuting Friday night, is one of their vehicles. The new series is centered on a trio of intergalactic bounty hunters known as Killjoys who capture criminals and go on missions to different planets. Oh, and the constant threat of a multi-planetary war hangs in the background. Sounds like fun, right? It is, but Killjoy walks precisely on the line between lighthearted humor and drama, never mixing the two successfully or wholly committing to one side.

The bounty hunters -- Dutch (Hannah John-Kamin), D'Avin (Luke Macfarlane), and John (Aaron Ashmore) -- are archetypes and feel like characters you've seen a dozen times before. The pilot spends so much time focusing on the ins and outs of the world (more on the world-building in a minute) that it doesn't do enough to make viewers care about these characters. Dutch is a Ripley-esque badass with a sketchy past and secrets, John is her partner who is scrappy and charming, and D'Avin -- John's brother and the newest member of the team -- is ex-military and a proficient fighter. The dynamics between John and Dutch don't suggest they've been working together for a while, and as soon as D'Avin's introduced, they try to convey his interest in Dutch with a few awkward and intense looks. Spending time developing the relationships and personalities would help bring depth to this series. Hannah John-Kamen, Luke Macfarlane, and Aaron Ashmore in KilljoysSince Killjoys takes place in another time and galaxy, it's important to establish the basics. What's the government like, do the Killjoys operate within the law (they do), etc. It's ground that has to be covered, and the first episode dives in enough to keep you in the know but still questioning. They don't dump too much information on you, and that's fortunate because the parts they do share are delivered quickly and left for you to piece together -- in a good, they trust the audience to be smart way.

The world of Killjoys has potential. The sets and production design are quite striking and go a long way towards pulling you into the fictional world. The Company and The R.A.C. are two components of a larger system, and I hope we learn more about the inner workings rather than sticking to chasing warrants each week.

On the outset, I thought I was in for camp on the level of Hercules: The Legendary Journeys. I would have been fine with that kind of tone, pleased even. But Killjoys doesn't seem to know where it wants to land. It's almost like they're afraid of being too campy so they hold back and peek at campy through the curtains. The dialogue would benefit from more wit. This is a world with space monks -- there's room to be silly and embracing the tone could make the series more appealing.

Killjoys has its moments. It's an adventure in space, for pity's sake. It gets points for the premise, and it is indeed fun. The fights aren't grounded in reality -- which is a smart move -- and it makes them enjoyable to watch. While the pilot isn't exactly riveting television and doesn't display much depth, it isn't bad and is light and entertain...

  3. Split (KJ can be really good but cypher is just better on this map.) 1.) split - (personal favorite) mainly due to how well KJ can defend on this map 2.) Ascent - has very good set up options for both sites on defense and there are some good flank setups for attacking 3.) haven - probably the most balanced map for defending and attacking.

  4. The Expanse is a better show than Killjoys - because i mean what is The Expanse not better than, but I probably enjoy Killjoys just as much. It is a very fun show, the story is awesome as well. I would put it above Dark Matter rankings wise, definitely. Helll yes. Its a joyride with good writing and fun characters.
