As someone else said, yes there is more romance. I'd say, without spoiling too much, the Mion/Keiichi relationship is the most explicit as it has Watanagashi and its answer arc focused on it, as well as a lot of hints in bonus arcs/materials. But, also said, it's never the focus!

For the main cast, club activities are a huge part of daily life. It’s one of the few ways they can really enjoy their free time with each other. When it comes down to it, Keiichi and Rena end up facing each other quite often. This shows you just how competitive they are, but also that they’ve got a good rapport with one another. The two are always...
Mion’s relationship with Keiichi is played off as comic relief most of the time. Keiichi enjoys teasing his friends, and whenever Mion is on the receiving end of it she usually doesn’t know how to handle things – resulting in some pretty funny interactions. Seeing the two have more interactions like that would certainly be fun to watch. But what’s ...
Of all the kids in the village, Rena is probably Keiichi’s closest friend. Though he’s close with all members of the club, Keiichi and Rena certainly seem to have one of the stronger bonds in the group. This is even more notable seeing that Keeichi is still pretty new to town when Higurashi starts. It’s even mentioned in the story that the two are ...
Though Keiichi and Rena have a strong bond, her feelings towards him are a little ambiguous and aren’t really expanded upon that much. With Mion on the other hand, things become a little more transparent. RELATED: 10 Anime To Watch If You Like Higurashi: When They Cry It’s pretty obvious that Mion has a crush on Keiichi throughout the show. While K...
Rena and Keiichi are a great duo, and we’ve already established that they’re good friends. That’s all because of the great dynamic the two have. The two are more than happy to help the other out and prove to be reliable when the other needs it. Rena & Keiichi have one of the most fleshed out relationships in the series, and it’s pretty clear that t...
This plays into the comic relief dynamic the two have going on, but throughout the story – at least in the anime – Mion and Keiichi have the most teased relationship of all the characters, save for maybe Shion and Satoshi. RELATED: When They Cry: The 10 Scariest Scenes From The Anime, Ranked It’s always played for laughs sure, but the series has te...
Rena and Keiichi’s strong bond is made clear throughout the anime, manga and games. They both have each other’s backs, and seem to trust one another pretty strongly. This is made very clear during the Atonement Arc. Keiichi’s determination to not give up on Rena during the events of that arc show just how strong of a bond they have. It’s not someth...
One of the most notable catalysts for one of the “bad Hinamizawa’s” is Keiichi failing to give Mion a doll he won – something he gives to Rena instead. Keiichi’s reasoning of Mion being too much of a tomboy to actually like the doll ends up hurting her feelings and setting off a pretty messed up chain of events. Higurashi’s first arc, the Spirited Away Arc introduces you to Hinamizawa, its residents and sets the bar for the disturbing events yet to come. The most memorable moment of the arc is at the end, when Keiichi’s suspicions and paranoia culminates in him slaying Mion and Rena. It’s a pretty gruesome scene, and a revelation in the Atonement Arc makes...
Keiichi has a pretty significant moment of selflessness regarding Mion that occurs during the Cotton Drifting Arc. Throughout the events of the arc, Shion and Mion are mistaken for one another, with the latter being blamed for the formers gruesome actions. As the events of the arc begin to die down, Keiichi – who’s about to be tortured by who he be...
