I’ve seen all four released versions of “Heaven’s Gate” and the latest Criterion version is best. The only difference between that and the premiere version is that Cimino deleted a few minutes from the roller skating scene and removed a bunch of silly subtitles in the end battle (stuff like “Help!”).
I think it's a good film and didn't deserve the backlash from critics it got. The pacing is off in places but there's not much else to criticise if you liked The Deer Hunter. Steven Sodderbergs cut from a few years ago is worth a watch too and addresses some of the pacing issues.

Sep 3, 2021 · Only an exceptionally brave American movie would dare to make that point, and Heaven’s Gate fits that bill. The movie’s ending is particularly perfect. After a nauseatingly bloody battle, the Stock Growers Association stand on the verge of defeat… until they are saved by the US Cavalry.
