Grafenwoehr housing on the base is limited and usually reserved for families or couples with pets. Additionally, unaccompanied E-6 and below are required to live in the barracks.
The Grafenwoehr Training Area (GTA) was created following the activation of the III Bavarian Army Corps in 1900 and in 1908, the training area was officially designated as Training Area Grafenwoehr. After WWII, U.S. Army Europe expanded the role and importance of the training area to meet the increased training needs, and it also increased the facilities to support the troops during training.

[1] [4] Undergoing a major expansion from 96 to 230 square kilometres (37 to 89 square miles) in 1938 and forcibly evicting more than 3,500 people from their villages, [3] the base was used by the Wehrmacht to practice blitzkrieg tactics.
