- E. histolytica, as its name suggests (histo – lytic = tissue destroying), is pathogenic; infection can be asymptomatic, or it can lead to amoebic dysentery or amoebic liver abscess. Symptoms can include fulminating dysentery, bloody diarrhea, weight loss, fatigue, abdominal pain, and amoeboma.

Dec 15, 2022 · Entamoeba histolytica and humans: from asymptomatic to symptomatic phenotype. The complex balance between “commensal-like” and pathogenic phenotypes for E. histolytica has allowed this parasite to become one of the most common human pathogens causing life-threatening infections.

Several protozoan species in the genus Entamoeba colonize humans, but not all of them are associated with disease. Entamoeba histolytica is well recognized as a pathogenic ameba, associated with intestinal and extraintestinal infections. Other morphologically-identical Entamoeba spp., including E. dispar, E. moshkovskii, and E. bangladeshi, are gen...
Cysts and trophozoites are passed in feces . Cysts are typically found in formed stool, whereas trophozoites are typically found in diarrheal stool. Infection with Entamoeba histolytica (and E.dispar) occurs via ingestion of mature cysts from fecally contaminated food, water, or hands. Exposure to infectious cysts and trophozoites in fecal matter d...
Pathogenic Entamoeba species occur worldwide and are frequently recovered from fresh water contaminated with human feces. The majority of amebiasis cases occur in developing countries. In industrialized countries, risk groups include men who have sex with men, travelers, recent immigrants, immunocompromised persons, and institutionalized population...
Apr 17, 2023 · Those infected by Entamoeba are mostly colonized by either E. histolytica or E. dispar. E. histolytica is the pathogenic form and can cause amoebic colitis and extraintestinal amoebiasis. E. dispar is considered to be nonpathogenic and causes no signs of disease.

E. histolytica is indistinguishable morphologically from E. dispar, E. moshkovskii, and E. bangladeshi but can be distinguished from a number of nonpathogenic microorganisms microscopically, including E. coli, E. hartmanni, E. polecki, Endolimax nana, and Iodamoeba bütschlii.
Dec 2, 2018 · Although the majority of individuals infected with E. histolytica remain asymptomatic, some present with amoebic colitis and disseminated disease. As more is learned about its pathogenesis and the host's immune response, the potential for developing a vaccine holds promise.
Feb 13, 2017 · Entamoeba histolytica is a unicellular, protozoon parasite of humans. It moves by a jelly-like tongue-like protrusion of the cytoplasm “pseudopodium.” Infection with E. histolytica may be the cause of a variety of symptoms, beginning from no symptoms to severe fulminating intestinal and/or life-threatening extraintestinal disease.
