It’s an awesome base. You just have to be willing to put in some effort. California drivers will however make it challenging, and be wary of the local Lancaster and Palmdale areas as they are crime stricken.

I don't know about the base but the area is the Mojave Desert so the summers are mid 90s to 110F. It's hot, windy, flat desert. It is about 30-45min from two towns that have malls and a ridiculous amount of car dealerships.
Overall the general consensus is that the base kinda sucks and the area kinda sucks. If you want to do cool things, there are tons, but they are all a drive away and the traffic can be miserable. These include things like beaches, mountains for hiking, Disneyland, Hollywood, all the cultural amenities of Los Angeles, etc.
