Xanadu (ザナドゥ, Zanadu), also known as Xanadu: Dragon Slayer II, is an action role-playing game developed by Nihon Falcom and released in 1985 for the PC-8801, X1, PC-8001, PC-9801, FM-7 and MSX computers. Enhanced remakes were later released for the Sega Saturn, PC-9801 and Windows platforms.
Two of the games released for the Nintendo Famicom, Dragon Slayer IV: Drasle Family and the spin-off of Xanadu known as Faxanadu, were released on the Nintendo Entertainment System in North America. The former was renamed Legacy of the Wizard.
The Legend of Xanadu is a action role-playing game developed by the Nihon Falcom Corporation. The eighth and final work in the "Dragon Slayer Series" produced by Yoshio Kiya.
The games Dragon Slayer, Xanadu: Dragon Slayer II, and Hydlide are notably the precursors of all action-based role-playing games. In particular, The Legend of Zelda and Zelda II: The Adventure of Link are both heavily based on Xanadu.
Despite being a sequel to the first Dragon Slayer game, it spawned a series of its own, including the well-known NES Spin-Off Faxanadu. Xanadu laid the foundations for two different video game genres, as the Trope Codifier of the Action RPG genre and the Ur-Example of the Metroidvania genre.
A late entry in their immensely popular Dragon Slayer series and a spiritual follow-up to the late ‘80s cult classic Faxanadu, Xanadu Next puts players in the shoes of a gravely injured knight given a new lease on life through ancient magic who must now seek a legendary sword called “Dragon Slayer” to ensure his survival.
Dragon Slayer began the Dragon Slayer series, a banner which encompasses a number of popular Falcom titles, such as Dragon Slayer II: Xanadu, Sorcerian, and Legacy of the Wizard. It also includes Dragon Slayer: The Legend of Heroes, which would later spawn over a dozen entries across multiple subseries.
