Obviously, if you can stay in Barcelona city it is much better. However, Badalona has a nice sea front with the views of the Mediterranean.

Badalona is a good mix imo. It is on the metro and very well connected to the city but at the same time if you walk north for 15 minutes you are in quiet beaches and up by Montgat. It is not massive, doesn't have night clubs for example, but has enough restaurants and a few bars.
Badalona is easily the worst / most dangerous / most ghetto part of the Barcelona capital metropolitan area. Poble Nou these days is a trendy gentrified place; 15-20 years ago was also an absolute ghetto industrial wasteland.
