The old mantra of "licensed games suck" often applies to mobile games as much as console releases. But the iOS release of Army of Darkness Defense is a pleasant surprise, delivering a fun take on the castle defense genre and injecting it with tons of fan service. It's simplistic, but a great way to eat away a few minutes during a commute -- especially for its introductory 99 cent price.

In Army of Darkness Defense you play as Ash, the protagonist from the film. You control Ash by touching either side of the screen, moving him left to right so that he attacks the incoming waves of enemies who are trying to capture the powerful book of the dead called the Necronomicon. If they succeed it's the end of life as we know it, so it's up to you to use Ash's special powers such as his shotgun -- affectionately referred to as his "boom stick" -- to take them on.

Where the castle defense element of Army of Darkness Defense comes into play is with your ability to call in allied troops. You automatically accumulate iron throughout each wave, enabling you to spend it to call in specific types of troops. Heavier troops like swordsmen cost more than a lowly, weak peasant, so players have to carefully spend their iron to put forth the right troops for a given attack. This is where the fun really begins in. On top of actively moving Ash around to collect the gold coins and iron that enemies sometimes drop, you have to micro-manage his abilities and strategically plan when to deploy specific troops. And later, when you have an array of troop types to pick from and only five you can bring with you into battle, you have to make hard choices before the round even starts. The gameplay is frantic and easy to understand, but also challenging as the waves of enemies become increasingly difficult.

I think Army of Darkness Defense is fun enough that it doesn’t matter if you’re familiar with the films, but fans will get a little extra from it. The tongue-in-cheek tone of the films is in full effect, with lines cut straight from the film blaring about every five seconds. This can quickly become annoying, but it’s certainly no reason to stop pla...
