Answer Smash is the sole Round 5 game in Richard Osman's House of Games. It was first played in Episode 1.

Answer Smash is always the last game played in each episode.

First, all contestants are shown a category that the next 2-4 pictures all belong in. They are then shown a picture belonging to the category and a question. They must identify what is in the picture and the answer to the question and smash the two answers together (for example, "Michael Fish" and "Ishmael" smash together to form "Michael Fishmael"). The first contestant to buzz in with the correct answer earns a point; however, if a contestant buzzes in with no answer or an incorrect answer, the contestant loses a point.

This round ends when a klaxon sounds to indicate the end of the game. After the klaxon sounds, the final scores are revealed, and the contestant with the highest score wins. In the event of a tie, the tie is broken with one final Answer Smash question, which may be in the same category as the previous question or in a new category.

From Series 1 to Series 3, the picture is shown above the question, and the smashed answer must have the picture answer first and the question answer second. From Series 5 onward, as well as in Night Series 1, the question is shown above the picture, and the smashed answer must have the question answer first and the picture answer second. Series 4 used a mixture of the two formats, with the new format being used in Weeks 44-47 and 51-52, and the old format being used in all other weeks in that series.

In Week 112 and Festive Episode 15, songs were used instead of pictures, with the songs being "shown" below the questions (as in the post-Series 4 format).

In episode articles, playings of Answer Smash are formatted as follows.

In this example, there is a single category containing two questions. The overlap between the two answers is indicated in brackets. In the first question, the fourth contestant gave the correct answer on the first buzz. In the second question, the first contestant timed out, then the fourth contestant gave an incorrect answer, then the second contestant gave the correct answer.

  2. Answer Smash (typically they get through 3-4 categories, with 2 questions in the first category and 3 questions in the rest of them) - This is probably the hardest round to write questions for, but that being said, it really isn't too bad!

  7. Anyway last week I was asked for an Answer Smash round. I wasn't familiar with this concept from a TV quiz show but it seemed like fun and I went with it. I had a lot of fun compiling the questions and it went down incredibly well.
