The film has a documentary feel, with handheld cameras used to good effect. A sense of tragedy looms from the outset. It is a shame that he doesn't let in a little more light.

Famous United Artists film from 1929 with Gloria Swanson in her smash-hit talkie debut. I saw this at the George Eastman House in Rochester last week; it has the only known complete print and it's a beautifully restored version. Swanson stars as a private secretary who marries a wealthy man's son.

A good early talkie right here! Of course the melodrama is as old-fashioned as they come, but it's really elevated by Swanson's excellent performance. A simply story, but very clean, logical and even quite relatable at times.
