It is revealed that Tobi subjected them to a genjutsu-based, limited version of the Infinite Tsukuyomi, the Limited Tsukuyomi, in the hopes of claiming the Nine-Tails without resorting to the Fourth Great Ninja War.
As much as it is stated that it is a genjutsu world and not real, the world acted to much like an alternate universe/reality rather than fake or anything. Even the characters in the world just seemed too real to me to right it off as a Genjutsu world.

- THE FILM HAS A FEW INCONSISTENCIES. Speaking of inconsistencies, the film actually has a few of them in itself. This is something that is fairly common in the world of animation, as at times animators can slip up and draw something different than it was in a previous scene.

- Hinata Hyūga — In the Genjutsu World, Hinata is sharp-tongued, domineering, and provocatively dressed. Her affection for "Menma" frequently manifests in violent fits of jealousy that border on vulgar death threats to other female characters, primarily Sakura (realising that she had been on a date with him when they first met).
- Kiba Inuzuka — Kiba's alternate counterpart is a cat-lover who wants to be a cat shaman, and he frequently fights with Akamaru because he is a dog and that he constantly bites him.
- Shino Aburame — The illusion version of Shino, though having the same personality as the original, is a horticulturist who hates any and all insects with a passion.
- Sasuke Uchiha — In the alternate reality, Sasuke is a smooth-talking playboy who would rather love than fight, due to the fact that the events of the Uchiha massacre and Sasuke's defection never occurred.
