Jul 1, 2015 · And then there is Child of God, a disturbing novel with a fierce ambition. McCarthy does something nearly impossible in this book: he generates sympathy for and identification with—at least for a while, anyway—serial killer Lester Ballard.
It tells the story of Lester Ballard, a man living in a rural county in the south in the 30s or 40s. He's the eponymous Child of God, and he is a disturbing, violent, and deeply engrossing main character whose crimes steadily escalate throughout the course of the novella.
Child of God is perhaps the greatest novel I read last year, and also maybe the greatest I've read this year. I plan on making room to read something else by McCarthy sometime this year - probably Blood Meridian or Sutree but it'll be hard pressed to beat Child of God for me.

Child of God, maybe, but also murderer, arsonist, and necrophiliac is crazy Lester Ballard from Tennessee. He shoots the man who buys his former homestead, the daughter of a friend who won't pull down her pants for him, and various random couples parking in the hills.
